Two suppliers quote you for the same satin label. One is noticeably cheaper, one has a minimum of 3,000 pieces, and one says your gradient "won't work". Nothing is wrong with either quote. They're quoting different presses.
Printing method is the hidden variable behind satin label pricing, minimum order quantity, colour accuracy and how the label ages. Here's what each method actually does to the ribbon, and how to tell which one your job needs.
The four things a method decides
Before the methods themselves, know what you're actually choosing between. The press determines all four of these at once.
Rotary screen printing: the durable workhorse
A rotary screen press pushes ink through a fine engraved cylinder onto the moving ribbon. One screen per colour, each screen engraved specifically for your artwork.
What that buys you is a genuinely thick ink film. Screen-printed satin has more ink sitting in and on the fibre than any other method, which is why it holds up best to abrasion and repeated washing. It also mixes real spot inks, so it's the only method that reliably hits a specific Pantone shade.

Thermal transfer: the small-type specialist
A thermal transfer printer runs a resin-coated ribbon over the satin beneath a heated printhead. Where the head fires, resin melts and bonds to the fabric. The image forms dot by dot, so there are no screens to engrave.
Two things follow from that. First, it holds very small type crisply: which is exactly why care labels with wash symbols and multilingual fibre content are nearly always thermal printed. Second, it handles variable data at no extra cost: different sizes, batch codes and serial numbers can all run in one pass.
Ribbon grade matters here. Thermal ribbons come in wax, wax-resin and full resin. Only full resin survives garment washing properly. If a supplier quotes thermal transfer for a wash-facing label, confirm it's resin. Wax grades are for paper and shipping labels.
Digital inkjet: the low-MOQ, any-colour option
Digital printing sprays CMYK inks straight onto a pre-coated satin ribbon. No screens, no plates, no setup: which changes the economics completely for a small brand.

Digital on dark satin needs a white under-base. CMYK inks are translucent, so printing colour straight onto black ribbon gives muddy, dull results. A white layer must be laid down first. Confirm your supplier is doing it. This is a common cause of disappointing black-satin samples.
Foil stamping and specials
Foil isn't really printing: a heated die presses metallic film onto the satin. It gives a true reflective gold or silver that no ink can imitate, and it's used as an accent: a logo mark, a border, a single word.
It's an extra pass with its own die cost, so it adds both money and lead time. Worth it on a premium fashion neck label, rarely worth it on a size or care label.
Which method your run needs
In practice the choice is nearly automatic once you know two numbers: how many labels, and how many colours.
Digital. No setup cost to amortise, and artwork changes stay cheap.
Rotary screen. Screens pay for themselves and you get the toughest print.
Digital, regardless of volume. A screen simply cannot hold a gradient.
Thermal transfer with a resin ribbon. Sharpest small text, variable data included.
What to ask before you approve a quote
Most satin quotes don't name the press. These five questions get you the information the quote left out.
- Which method is this quoted on? The answer changes everything below it.
- How many colours are included, and what does an extra one cost?
- Is there a screen or die charge, and is it one-off or repeated on reorders?
- On dark ribbon, is a white under-base included? If not, expect dull colour.
- Will the strike-off come off the same press as the bulk run? A digital proof of a screen job proves nothing.

Ask which press before you compare prices. Two satin quotes that differ by 40% usually aren't competing. They're describing different products.
What actually moves the quote
Printing method is one input into a price and rarely the largest. Three other things move a satin quote more, and all three are within your control at the design stage.
- Colour count, on screen work. Each colour is a separate screen, a separate pass and a separate setup charged once regardless of run length. Dropping from five colours to three is usually the single biggest saving available.
- Quantity. Setup does not scale down, so a short run carries the whole of it. This is why a thousand labels and three thousand labels can be closer in total price than people expect.
- Label size. Material and machine time both follow area, and a label specified larger than it needs to be pays for that on every piece.
- Finishing. A fold, a special cut or a stitched edge is a separate operation rather than something the cut delivers free.
The order to work in is therefore: simplify the palette, settle the size, then choose the method. Doing it the other way round, picking a method and then trying to economise inside it, gives up the two largest levers before you start.
It is also worth quoting the whole set together where you can, so the brand label, care label and any size tabs share one enquiry. That is one setup conversation rather than three, and it is the only reliable way to confirm the pieces read as a family before anything is made.
Pieces ordered separately drift, because printed colour and woven colour are produced by completely different means and a white that matched on paper often does not match in the hand.
What the artwork has to do differently for each
Methods are usually compared on cost and durability, and the more useful comparison is what each one demands from the artwork before it will look right.
Screen printing wants simplification. Each colour is a separate screen and a separate pass, so the design should be built from flat solid areas with clear separation. Gradients, soft shadows and photographic elements have no route through this process, and fine hairlines struggle because ink spreads slightly as it is pushed through the mesh. A design drawn for screen looks bold and deliberate.
Thermal transfer wants restraint. It is built for crisp small type in one colour, which is precisely why care labels use it. Send it a multi-colour brand mark and it is the wrong tool; send it eight lines of composition text and care symbols and it will hold every one.
Digital wants resolution. Colour count stops mattering, so the constraint moves to the file itself. Supply artwork at a size and resolution that survives the print, because digital reproduces whatever softness the file contains rather than flattening it into a solid the way a screen does.
The practical consequence is that the same logo should not be sent unchanged to all three. Ask which method the quote assumes, then check the artwork against that method rather than against a screen.
How each one ages in the wash
All three methods look good on day one. They separate over a year of laundering, and the way each one fails is characteristic.
- Screen print lays down a thicker ink film, so it holds colour longest. When it does go, it goes evenly: the whole mark softens rather than breaking up.
- Thermal transfer holds fine detail well and tends to lighten gradually, with the smallest type going first. On a care label that matters, because the symbols are the smallest elements on it.
- Digital varies most by supplier and by ink chemistry, so it is the one to wash-test rather than assume.
- Foil and specials are decorative rather than durable. They belong on labels that are looked at more than they are laundered.
Test the same way regardless of method: stitch the sample to a scrap of your real fabric, wash it five times at the temperature your care label permits, and read it at arm's length. The question is not whether the print survived, it is whether the smallest element is still legible.
Common mistakes
- Approving colour from a screen rather than a physical sample on the actual base ribbon.
- Sending a gradient or photographic artwork to a screen-printed quote.
- Specifying five colours when three would read identically at label size, which is the largest avoidable cost on any screen job.
- Putting dense care text on a method built for solid colour.
- Judging per-piece price on a short screen run, where setup dominates.
- Printing edge to edge on a neck label and being surprised it feels stiff.
- Reordering without recording the ink recipe and base ribbon, then wondering why the second batch differs.

Send the artwork, the quantity and where the label sits on the garment. Those three between them decide the method, and it is better to pick the method around the label than to force the label through a method that was chosen first. If the quantity is still moving, say so, because the method that suits a thousand pieces is not always the one that suits five.
