If you've started looking for clothing labels, you've probably heard the same two words on repeat, woven and printed. They cost different amounts, feel different on skin, age differently in the wash, and the wrong choice can quietly cheapen a great garment. This guide cuts through the jargon so you can pick confidently.

The 60-second answer

If your design has 1-8 thread colours and you want a premium tactile feel, woven is almost always the right call. If your design has gradients, photographic detail, more than 8 colours, or you're optimising hard on unit cost. Go printed. Everything below is the long-form reasoning.

And if you only remember one thing beyond that: the choice is usually decided by your artwork, not by your budget or your brand positioning. A mark with fine strokes, small text or a gradient has already chosen printed for you, whatever you would prefer. A simple mark at a reasonable size can go either way, and that is the only case where taste and cost genuinely get a vote.

How they're actually made

A woven label is exactly what it sounds like. Your design is woven into the fabric using coloured threads on a jacquard loom. The colour is structural; it can't peel or fade because it isn't sitting on top of the fabric, it is the fabric. Three weave types matter:

  • Damask: high thread density, sharpest detail, slightly stiff hand.
  • Satin: smooth sheen, softest on skin, the default for casual wear.
  • Jacquard: heavy, structured, premium tactile feel for outerwear and denim.

A printed label uses dye-sublimation or screen printing on a fabric base (satin, cotton or taffeta ribbon). The print sits on the surface, but on synthetic bases like satin and taffeta, sublimation dyes fuse into the fabric: closer to woven longevity than people expect.

That difference in manufacture explains almost every other difference between them. Weaving builds the design out of threads, so the smallest feature it can make is about the width of a few threads. Printing lays ink or dye onto an existing surface, so its smallest feature is limited by the press rather than by the cloth. Everything below, detail, colour, cost curve, lead time, follows from that one fact.

Small text and fine detail

This is the practical dividing line, and it decides more orders than brand positioning does.

On a woven label, letters are built from threads. Below roughly 4 mm of letter height, the enclosed gaps inside characters, the holes in 8, 6, 0, R, e, start to close up, because the weave cannot make a gap thinner than a couple of threads. A fine serif typeface loses its thin strokes first. This is a physical limit, not a quality issue, and no supplier can weave past it.

On a printed label, the same text at the same size is straightforward. That is why care labels, which carry composition, symbols, an address and sometimes two languages, are almost always printed. It is not a cost decision. It is the only way to fit the content and keep it readable.

  • Logo or wordmark, 4 mm and up, simple shapes: woven handles it well.
  • Fine serif, hairline strokes, small caps: printed, or redraw the mark for weaving.
  • Paragraphs of care text, addresses, multi-language: printed, always.
  • Gradients, photographs, drop shadows: printed. Weaving has no mechanism for them.

If your logo is fine and you want it woven, the honest fix is a simplified version of the mark for the label rather than a supplier who claims they can weave it. Most heritage brands maintain exactly such a simplified label lockup.

Colour works differently in each

Founders expect to hand over a Pantone reference and receive it back. What actually happens depends entirely on which process you chose.

Woven colour comes from a thread card. The mill holds a finite set of dyed threads, and your colour is matched to the nearest one. It is a physical library, not a mixing system, so an exact Pantone hit is sometimes available and sometimes genuinely is not. The upside is repeatability: once a thread number is recorded, every future run uses that same thread and the colour cannot drift.

Printed colour is mixed. That usually gets closer to a specific Pantone, and it handles a large number of colours without adding cost per colour the way weaving does. The trade-off is that inks and substrates vary batch to batch, so repeatability depends on the supplier recording and re-using the recipe.

The practical consequence: if your brand colour is unusual and non-negotiable, ask to see it on a woven thread before assuming weaving can match it. Our guide to Pantone matching on woven labels covers how close you can realistically expect to get.

Also note how colour count affects each. On woven, each additional thread colour is a setup step and a cost. On printed, going from two colours to six changes very little. A six-colour design is not a woven design.

The honest truth: most fashion brands need both, a woven neck label for the brand mark, and a printed care label for wash symbols and fibre composition. Not either/or.

At low volumes (50-500 pieces), printed labels are cheaper per piece, typically 30-50% less than equivalent woven. As volumes climb past 1,000-2,000 pieces, woven prices drop sharply and the gap narrows. By 5,000+ pieces the difference is small enough that the choice should be driven by feel, not cost.

The shape of that curve comes from setup. A woven label needs the loom threaded with your colours and the jacquard programmed to your design before a single label exists, and that work costs the same for a hundred labels or fifty thousand. Printing has a lighter make-ready, so it starts cheaper and improves more gently. Woven starts expensive and falls faster.

The same logic applies to changes. Adding a colour to a woven design means re-threading; adding one to a printed design is a file. If you expect the label to evolve, a sub-brand, a seasonal variant, a second colourway, that flexibility has real value and it sits on the printed side.

Lead time and reordering

Woven takes longer on a first order for the same reason it costs more: the setup is physical. Printed and heat-transfer labels skip the weaving setup, which is why they are the usual answer when a deadline is already tight.

On reorders the two converge. Once a woven label's setup is recorded, a repeat run is quick, and the recorded thread numbers make it more colour-stable across seasons than a printed label whose ink recipe was never written down. Over a multi-season life, woven is often the lower-variance option even though it was the slower first order.

Edges and folds

Both types are cut from a longer web, and how that cut is finished matters more to the customer than the printing method does.

  • Hot or ultrasonic cut: seals the edge by melting it. Reliable on synthetics, but leaves a firm edge that can feel sharp at the back of a neck.
  • Laser cut: a cleaner sealed edge, and the option that allows shaped labels rather than rectangles.
  • Folded edges: an end fold or centre fold hides the cut entirely, which is why folded labels feel softer even in the same material.

A woven damask label with a hard cut edge can scratch, while the same design in the same material with a mitre fold does not. If softness matters, specify the fold before you argue about the weave. Our guide to edge finishes covers the trade-offs.

Wash durability, what really happens

Both label types survive normal wash cycles fine. Where it goes wrong:

  • Cheap heat-transfer prints (not the same as printed labels) peel after 5-10 washes. Avoid these on anything you sell.
  • Uncoated cotton-tape printed labels can fade slightly after 50+ washes if exposed to bleach.
  • Woven labels are essentially permanent. Colour is structural.

If your customer washes hot or uses bleach (think kids' uniforms, hotel linen), default to woven damask. If they wash cold and gentle (D2C fashion, boutique), either works fine.

Skin feel

This is where woven satin shines: softest possible hand-feel, almost imperceptible against skin. Cheap woven (low-density damask, stiff polyester) can scratch. Quality printed satin is comparable to woven satin in feel. Cotton-tape printed labels have a natural matte texture that some brands actively prefer for organic / sustainable positioning.

The set most brands actually order

Framing this as a single choice is what makes it hard. In practice a garment carries a small set of labels, and each position has its own answer.

  • Neck or brand label, woven. It is the piece the customer touches and associates with you, and it carries a simple mark at a size weaving handles well.
  • Care label, printed. Composition, symbols, origin and address will not weave legibly at that size, in any material.
  • Size tab, either. Woven if it should match the neck label; printed if the codes are long or the range is wide.
  • Hem or outer tag, woven. It is visible branding and it needs to hold up to abrasion.
  • Activewear neck, heat transfer. Nothing physical against skin at all.

Quote the whole set as one job. It is one setup instead of three, and it is also the only way to check that the woven and printed pieces sit together as a family rather than as two unrelated labels, which is where mismatched whites and slightly different brand colours usually come from.

Common mistakes

  • Sending a logo with gradients or a drop shadow for a woven quote, then being told it "cannot be done" without knowing why.
  • Setting woven text below about 4 mm and approving it on a screen rather than on cloth.
  • Assuming a Pantone code will be matched exactly on thread.
  • Choosing woven for a care label because woven sounds more premium.
  • Pairing a woven neck label with a printed size tab and expecting the whites to match.
  • Deciding on weave and material but leaving the fold and edge finish to the supplier, then finding the label scratches.
  • Not recording thread or ink references, so season two does not match season one.

The pattern is that most regret comes from specifying the process and neglecting everything around it. Weave versus print is the headline decision and rarely the one that goes wrong.

What we would recommend

For most fashion brands: a woven satin neck label with a folded edge, a printed satin care label, and a size tab matched to whichever of the two it sits beside. That combination covers premium feel where it is felt and legibility where it is read.

Go woven damask if you are positioned as premium or heritage and your mark is simple enough to weave cleanly. Go fully printed if your identity depends on colour work that weaving cannot reproduce. Go heat transfer if the garment stretches and sits against skin.

And whichever you pick, approve a physical sample rather than a screen proof. Both processes look identical on a monitor, and the entire difference between them is something you can only assess by touch.
